Rostow’s five-stage model of economic growth was developed earlier than the core-periphery concept of Wallerstein’s three-part world system theory was created so the focus that each takes was vastly different. Rostow’s five-stage model of economic growth focused on single country’s development into details. The stages separate into five stages—Traditional Society, Preconditions for Takeoff, Takeoff, Drive to Maturity, and Age of Mass Consumption—. It describes the development of country from primary sector to tertiary sector by going through agrarian society, innovation in productivity, rapid growth in industries, international trade and specialization, and shift from heavy industry. This model fails to take into consideration of the backward economies that several countries might go through and the colonization that might control the country’s economy as a whole. On the other hand, core-periphery concept of Wallerstein resolved the interferences described in Rostow’s model. It solely compares the different economic situation between MEDC and LEDC countries, which means it illustrates the diverse economic behavior and situation of many countries. Moreover, the concept of core state’s control over periphery state is also clearly stated which illustrates the idea of colonialism through power and wealth.
The country like Mexico is the example of semi-periphery state according to Wallerstein’s theory. It is a country that is currently moving towards industrialization. Mexico is influenced by the big countries like United States and Canada economically but it does also control other periphery countries. Tokyo, Japan and Hong Kong, China can be described with the core-periphery concept in the way that both are the cities in core state and semi-periphery, accordingly. Tokyo as one of the largest economic city in the world incorporates the newest technologies in their industries like the hybrid cars and robots are the major examples. However, the state’s raw materials are still heavily based on imports because the country is not yet sustainable enough in the production industries. Hong Kong, China is considered as a periphery state that is going through the fast economic growth through secondary sector. They are in the stage heading to industrialization because they are relatively developed and diversified in economies.

The international borders of African countries are part of superimposed boundary that the border line between other countries is overruled or placed on top of one another. This is problematic in terms of politics and culture because it increases the possibilities of internal and external conflict inside the countries. Internal conflict includes the religious and ethnic beliefs and the loss of culture while external conflict includes the violent cross-border conflicts. These conflicts would increase the number of refugees and victims, which arouse the vastly change the population in the country. The country might as well become a multi-ethnic or multinational state through the mix of people from different ethnic groups. Landlocked country like in Africa is often faces the problem of transportation. It has a comparatively far distance between the seas and makes their trading harder and more expensive. Throughout the process, the country must spend the additional cost of shipping the goods near the port that the compact state would not need to go through.
